Composio vs Zapier MCP: Two Different Bets (and the Question Neither Answers)
People keep framing this as a head-to-head, and I get why. Composio and Zapier MCP are the two names that come up first when you search for a way to hand an AI agent real tools. Both speak MCP. Both list an intimidating number of integrations. Both have good docs.
But they're not competing products. They're different bets on who you are.
Composio bets you're a developer shipping an agent product. Zapier MCP bets you're a person who wants one connection to reach everything. Those are both reasonable bets. The trouble starts when you're neither, when the real question is "I want Claude doing serious work in my own Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Jira," and you try to force one of these two into that shape.
I've written up both individually (Composio here, Zapier MCP here), so this post is the direct comparison, plus an honest account of where we think a third option fits.
What each one actually is
Composio is a builder's platform. Its quickstart has you calling composio.mcp.generate(user_id, mcp_config_id) from inside an application you write. You create server configs, generate per-user MCP URLs in code, and wire your end users to their accounts. The output is a hosted endpoint your product hands to an agent. The input is a development project. Over 1,000 toolkits, managed OAuth, an MCP Tool Router for dynamic tool discovery, and enterprise governance (RBAC, SSO, SCIM, audit logs). It's genuinely well engineered for that job.
Zapier MCP is the opposite shape. No code at all. You point Claude at one server URL and you can reach 9,000+ apps through the same actions Zapier built for Zaps. Setup takes about five minutes, and the auth is zero-config because Zapier already holds your app connections.
So: one is an SDK you build on, the other is a switchboard you plug into.

A few of those rows deserve unpacking.
Depth. Zapier's Google actions are automation primitives: send an email, add a row, create a draft. Good Zap steps, thin editing tools. Google's own APIs expose batchUpdate for Docs and Slides, the call that lets you restructure a document or lay out a deck, and Zapier doesn't surface it. Composio goes deeper where it has invested (its Gmail coverage is dozens of actions, honestly impressive), but at the time of writing it still has no standalone Slides toolkit and no standalone Contacts toolkit.
Cost. Zapier meters tasks against the same budget your Zaps use. An agent that fires a dozen calls to finish one request draws that budget down faster than a human clicking ever would. Composio's cost is different in kind: it's platform pricing plus the engineering time to build and maintain the integration layer. Neither is wrong. They just charge on different axes, and you should model your actual usage before committing to either.
Security. Both are ahead of most of the field here, and ahead of us on general-purpose attestations. Composio has SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. Zapier has SOC 2 Type II and years of trust-program work. Credit where due.
The question neither answers well
Here's the scenario I keep hearing from actual users, and it's the one that sent me down this rabbit hole in the first place.
You're an ops lead, a founder, or a senior IC. Your week lives in Google Workspace and maybe Jira. You want Claude to triage two inboxes in one prompt, restructure a messy meeting doc into sections, build a five-slide deck from the summary, update a tracking sheet, and file follow-up tasks for each owner.
With Composio, someone has to build an app before you can start. You're not Composio's user, you're Composio's user's user, and for an audience of one that's a sprint of scaffolding to read your own email.
With Zapier MCP, you can start right now, and then you hit the ceiling partway through. The doc gets a paragraph appended instead of restructured. The deck doesn't happen, because Slides isn't on the MCP surface. Neither are Tasks. You get half a job and a to-do list.
This is the gap DataToRAG sits in, and it's why we built it.

Multi-account in one prompt. A work Gmail, a personal one, and a shared team inbox all connect under one endpoint, and Claude can target one or search across all of them.
Nothing stored. The gateway is pass-through: requests go to Google on your behalf and results come straight back. There's no copy of your inbox on our servers, because there's no copy at all. And it's Google-verified: we passed CASA Tier 2, the security review Google requires for restricted Gmail and Drive scopes, with zero findings, verified June 2026.
Self-hosting that isn't an enterprise upsell. The core is MIT-licensed and runs on Docker Compose with your own Postgres. If your security team wants the data on infrastructure they control, that's a clone, not a contract.
We will never have 9,000 apps, and we're not trying to. Depth over breadth is the whole bet.
How I'd actually choose
Building an agent product that connects your customers to hundreds of apps? Composio. It's the strongest version of that platform I've used, and the governance story is real.
Living across a long tail of SaaS tools, already paying for Zapier, and mostly need discrete actions triggered? Zapier MCP. Nothing reaches as far, as fast.
